Weekly Incident Report: December 15-21, 2025

Dear SMART Members and Friends,

A busy week with seals dominating our rescue activities, including one persistent pup who clearly enjoyed the HAH hospitality!

The Persistent Pup: A Four-Time Visitor

Monday, December 15th brought us stranded Pup #24. After an overnight stay at HAH, we returned him to Seal Island the next day. Little did we know this was just the beginning of our relationship with this determined youngster!

Over the following three consecutive days, we rescued the same pup three more times. He was strong and healthy, so we decided to give him another chance. This time, the crew of the GoDive boat transported him back, and success! He clambered up onto the rocks and stayed put. Perhaps he was simply enjoying the special treatment at HAH – we can’t blame him!

Heartbreaking Loss

Tuesday, December 16th: Pup #25 stranded in very weak condition with injuries. Despite dedicated treatment and care at HAH, the pup sadly died two days later. These losses remind us why our work matters, even when we can’t save them all.

Successful Rescue

Friday, December 19th: Pup #26 stranded and was taken to HAH. This healthy, strong pup was successfully returned to Seal Island by the GoDive crew the following day.

Dramatic Fishing Line Rescue

Saturday afternoon: Multiple calls reported an entangled yearling seal at Hartenbos Beach. The animal had a “crows nest” of fishing line wound tightly around its body and flippers. Michael successfully freed the seal, which immediately headed back into the water at warp speed – or as fast as seals can move when liberated!

Current Monitoring Situation

Late Saturday afternoon, we received reports and videos of a large seal resting on rocks near the Viking Factory. With rough sea conditions, the animal likely came out to rest. Due to the risky access location, we’re monitoring from a safe distance.

Volunteer Appreciation

Our volunteers were called upon at all hours this week, responding with dedication and professionalism. Heartfelt thanks to: Elzan, Carli, Ursula, Michael, and Annelize for going the extra mile.

Special gratitude to the crews of Esperance and GoDive for transporting pups back “home” to Seal Island.
