Weekly Incident Report | 6 – 12 July 2026

After the hectic few days last week, King Neptune and Mother Nature decided that our dedicated volunteers needed some time out. No calls requiring active response were received at all, until today. A handover of specimens to DFFE on Friday, and one sad call on Sunday to close the week.

Specimen Handover to DFFE, Mossel Bay

📍 Location: Mossel Bay   📅 Date: Friday 10 July   👤 Received by: Deon Kotze, DFFE Cape Town

  • Deon Kotze from DFFE in Cape Town passed by on his way home from Port Alfred, and we handed over the specimens collected from a dolphin at Dana Bay.
  • Happy birthday Deon, we hope you enjoyed your potjie! Thank you for your staunch and unwavering support over the last 10 years.

🔬 Status: Dana Bay dolphin specimens handed over to DFFE for analysis.

Deceased Dolphin Calf, Suiderkruis Beach

📍 Location: Suiderkruis Beach, Great Brak River   📅 Date: Sunday 12 July (today)   👤 Responder: Val

  • A caller reported a small deceased dolphin on Suiderkruis beach in Great Brak River. Val responded and found a recently born male calf, with no significant injuries.
  • The neo-natal folds (stripes) were still visible, as were the rostrum whiskers, both signs of a very young animal.
  • A sad way to end an otherwise uneventful week.

🐬 Status: Newborn male calf recovered. No significant injuries observed; cause of death undetermined.

Till next Sunday, go well. 🐾
