SMART Weekly Incident Report 7–13 April 2025

Dear SMART supporters,

Here’s your roundup of marine wildlife incidents for the week. It’s been a busy and emotional one, with a mix of hopeful rescues and some somber discoveries.

🐬 Monday, 7 April – Dana Bay Dolphin Calf

We received a call and photos from a concerned beachgoer about a very small (possibly newborn) dolphin stranded on Dana Bay First Beach. Before Smarties Elzan and Alwyn could arrive, the caller’s husband carried the calf back into the ocean. Unfortunately, no other dolphins were seen nearby, and after more than an hour walking the coast between First and Third Beach, our team could not relocate it.
It is sadly unlikely the calf survived, but no additional sightings or reports were received.

🐢 Monday, 7 April – Deceased Green Turtle

Later the same day, a large green turtle carcass was found late at night on Diaz Beach by Michael. Despite signs of decomposition, there were no visible injuries. Michael secured the turtle overnight and helped Val collect genetic samples, photos, and measurements the following day. These samples will contribute to ongoing research and conservation efforts.

🦭 Saturday, 12 April – Sick Seal at Tergniet

A report came in of a sick or exhausted seal at Tergniet Beach. Responders Michelle, Jèlane, and Elzan found it, but it returned to the sea before they could assist.
Roughly 80 minutes later, it stranded again. This time, Jèlane and Elzan were able to safely crate the animal with support from Val (who also carried the phones and towels—teamwork at its best!).

The seal was transported to Hartenbos Animal for care, but sadly, it was showing neurological symptoms and appeared very unwell. As it was the weekend, we’ve not received any updates on its condition yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you informed in next week’s report.

Thank you to all the volunteers and supporters who continue to assist with these critical rescues and investigations. Every report, every call, every helping hand makes a difference.

Until next week,
The SMART Team

Stay safe, stay kind to our ocean friends 💙
