SMART Weekly Incident Report 24–30 March 2025

Dear SMART Community,

This past week has tested us deeply—physically, emotionally, and as a team. From rare whale strandings to public safety concerns and vital education outreach, we’ve been stretched but inspired by the dedication and courage of everyone involved.

🐋 Monday, 24 March – Tragic Beaked Whale Stranding

It was all hands on deck when a mother and calf pair of beaked whales (possibly Ramari’s beaked whales, confirmation pending) stranded at Hartenbos. SMART teams, NSRI, and members of the public worked tirelessly to refloat them three times, but sadly, they restranded each time.

Following expert advice and in consultation with authorities, both animals were humanely euthanised to spare further suffering. As night fell, the scene was secured with perimeter tape for further investigation.

On Tuesday, Dr. Greg Hofmeyr made the long trip from Gqeberha to collect data and scientific samples, which may offer insights into this rare and haunting event. The incident has drawn considerable media attention, and we encourage you to read more and share awareness via our Facebook page.

💙 Heartfelt thanks to every SMART volunteer who braved cold water and sandstorms, and to our partners at NSRI, Oceans Research, and IWGA—your support was invaluable in this difficult time.

🐢 Tuesday, 25 March – Loggerhead Hatchling Rescue

A tiny loggerhead hatchling was found at Wilderness and transported to Dr. de Graaff. It continued its journey to Cape Town the following day, thanks to our ever-reliable Turtle Taxi network.

🏫 Thursday, 27 March – 700 Learners Reached!

We continued our marine education outreach with a fantastic visit to Park Primary School in Mossel Bay, reaching over 700 enthusiastic learners. The sessions were split into two groups, giving mascot Sammy a well-earned breather (it’s like a sauna inside that suit—max 40 minutes per Smartie!).

🐧 Friday, 28 March – Penguin Pickup at Tergniet

Quick-thinking Smartie Jèlane helped SAPREC collect a tiny, exhausted penguin from Tergniet Beach. Her close proximity made all the difference—thank you, Jèlane!

🦭 Saturday, 29 March – Ailing Seal at the Point

Late Saturday afternoon, a very ill juvenile seal was found at The Point. Showing neurological symptoms and frothing at the mouth, it was rushed to the animal hospital by Michael, Sarie, Tersia, and Linda. Sadly, it passed away shortly after arrival. Testing for rabies is underway.

One concerning note: a visitor from Pretoria stroked the seal before our team arrived and was advised to seek medical attention. This prompted internal discussions on how to increase public awareness—especially as the Easter holidays begin and our beaches grow busier.

⚠️ Rabies Confirmed & Carcass Update

The CFS pup rescued last week tested positive for rabies. We urge everyone to avoid touching marine wildlife and report any strandings immediately.
Meanwhile, IWGA managed 17 seal carcasses this week, spanning the coastline from Diaz to Great Brak.

As we head into the Easter weekend, let’s remain vigilant, compassionate, and safety-conscious. Every alert eye and willing hand helps protect our marine life—and each other.

With heartfelt thanks,
The SMART Team

Together, we turn tragedy into understanding, and care into action. 💙
